Today in the “A”: Falcons Update

The Springfield Falcons approach the Thanksgiving holiday with a couple of roster moves and a suspension.

The transaction yoyo rode swiftly for Allen York. York you’ll recall, was last week assigned to the ECHL Chicago Express. He turned in a nice 39 save effort for the Express last Saturday night when Chicago defeated the Cincinnati Cyclones in a tense 2-1 duel.

Yorkie was no sooner assigned back to the Falcons when Steve Mason got his head in the way of a Rick Nash shot at Monday’s pre-game skate. Mason’s condition, listed as day-to-day, necessitated York’s return to Columbus.

In the meantime, Matt Calvert was re-assigned to the Falcons. The hopes are to get Calvert some more ice time, as he wasn’t getting a lot of quality minutes of late in Columbus.

Captain Dane Byers was on the receiving end of a two game suspension, issued by the AHL. Byers will miss the Falcons next two games because of an illegal check to the head in last Friday’s game in Providence.

Elsewhere in AHL suspension news, Kris Newbury of the Connecticut Whale drew a four gamer, also for an illegal check to the head. Newbury will miss Saturday’s game in Springfield, as will Byers.

The Falcons next game is in Glens Falls on Friday night, when they take on the Adirondack Phantoms.

For the record, the Falcons will be practicing as usual on Thursday morning.
