Shrapnel – 7/21/12

A little over 31 hours ago, tragedy struck Aurora, CO. It was senseless, brutal, terrifying violence.

It was made even worse for us because we lost one of our own.

I didn’t really know Jessica. I think we had some twitter chirps back and forth a few times. That doesn’t matter, though, when I see how she touched so many lives. and how they now try to figure out how she could be gone. There are11 other families and countless friends facing the same battle, and my heart goes out to all of them.

Meanwhile, the world goes on, even for those who feel time has been stopped, and there is a lot of hockey to discuss.

At Backhand Shelf, Jake Goldsbie looks at the NHL’s culture of violence, while Ellen Etchingham talks about puck hypnosis.

Cam Charron looks at the exodus of veteran D from the Central Division, something that Gallos also took up over at DBJ and Aaron Portzline referenced at Puck Rakers.

Over at Fear The Hat, Lori Schmidt produced a great Rick Nash rumor rundown which gets broken down further at DBJ Plus in an awesome companion piece, and Harrison Mooney over at Puck Daddy weighs in on if the Sharks should continue to hold firm on keeping Logan Couture out of any Nash trade packages.

If you haven’t been over the Bluejackets.com for the past few days, there’s a nice new video series to “Meet the New Jackets” – the first episode features Jack Johnson, and part two brings you Nick Foligno.

Justin Goldman of The Goalie Guild sat down to talk Sergei Bobrovsky with Rob Mixer, and the team still needs some help up front.

Meanwhile, we still wait on word from the Predators about Shea Weber’s offer sheet, but it can tell us a lot about the CBA issues currently being discussed, and Alison uses the situation to talk a bit about hearts and minds in the fanbase.

Finally, as anyone with a pirate satellite knows, ESPN really needs to start showing “SportsCentre” in the US, but that just makes too much sense, doesn’t it…?
