Falcons Recap: PRO 4, SPR 0

The Springfield Falcons concluded their pre-season schedule, dropping a 4-0 verdict to the Providence Bruins on Saturday night in Springfield. The Falcons went 0-3 in their preseason games.

The Falcons saw a few more regulars join the lineup on Saturday night as Dane Byers, Cody Bass and Cody Goloubef took to the ice.

Physical play carried over from Friday night’s game, as Chaz Johnson punched Zach McKelvie of the Bruins. McKelvie didn’t retaliate and subsequently, Johnson was given 2 for roughing, 5 for fighting and a ten minute misconduct. On the ensuing seven minute power play, the B’s notched a pair of goals, just 11 seconds apart.

Calle Ridderwall ruined a Falcons power play early in the second period, when he tallied a short handed goal, staking Providence to a 3-0 lead.

The physicality continued as Johnson later squared off with Nathan McIver. The last bout of the night had the Falcons Mike Thomas mixing it up with Tyler Randell. Thomas was cut it the fight.

Third period was much quieter. No goals and no fights, only two minor penalties whistled.

The Falcons outshot the Bruins by a margin of 30-24 on the night. Dan Taylor who started last season on the Falcons goaltending carousel split the game for Providence with Michael Hutchinson. Allen York went the distance for the Falcons.

Following the game the Falcons released five players from camp: Obi Aduba, Phil Ginard, Ryan Palmer, Joe Grimaldi and Wade Poplawski.

With yesterday’s moves by the Blue Jackets, and more expected by mid-week, the Falcons roster continues to take shape as the Birds prepare for the regular season opener this Friday night in Manchester, NH when they take on the Los Angeles Kings affiliate, the Manchester Monarchs.
