Falcons Game 15: Workin’ Overtime

The Springfield Falcons concluded their season long, six game homestand with a thrilling 3-2 overtime win over the Worcester Sharks on Wednesday night.

Although he didn’t make the Three Stars of the game, the Falcons would not have had the chance at the win had it not been for a positively huge save by Manny Legace in the extra session.

The Sharks’ Mike Connolly was awarded a penalty shot 52 seconds into OT. Here’s the result:

The Sharks skated to a 1-0 first period lead when Sena Acolatse blasted home a power play goal with Cody Goloubef in the box for an unsportsmanlike conduct minor. Acolatse’s goal ended an 0 for 19 power play drought for the Sharks.

Tomas Kubalik brought the Falcons even at 11:29 of the second period when he notched his second goal of the season. This was another Falcons power play goal; the team has been impressive with the man advantage over the last few weeks.

Details and more video after the jump…

Assisting on the Kubalik goal were

Martin St. Pierre

and

Cam Atkinson

. The assist extended St. Pierre’s point streak to nine games.
With the score tied 1-1 after 40 minutes, the game was a well played back and forth match up of two fairly matched teams. I got the sense that whoever scored first in the third period might just win this game.
That first goal of the third period was a quickie by Tomas Kubalik. Kubalik went down the right side of the ice and completed a real nice bang-bang play on passes from the returning Nick Drazenovic and

Dane Byers

.

Byers, by the way, was featured on Puck Daddy for his Saturday night meltdown. The video on PD has what was left off of the original video, so be sure to check it out.

Worcester’s PP unit converted midway through the period. Martin St. Pierre was off for an interference penalty, and Matt Irwin blasted one home from the point to once again knot the game at two apiece.

The game then went to OT, and after the penalty shot that was awarded (questionably, btw) to Connolly, the Sharks’ Nathan Moon was whistled for a tripping minor at the 1:50 mark.

Here are the goals of the night:

Three Stars of the Game:
1. Tomas Kubalik
2. Alexandre Giroux
3. Matt Irwin

Personally, the win was only possible due to Legace’s save on the penalty shot in OT, so he at least deserves an honorable mention.

The Falcons return to action tomorrow night when they travel to Providence, RI to take on the Bruins. Game time is 7PM.
