Cornel won’t wow you, but he does bring enough to the table to be a solid two-way contributor. There are questions though- does he have enough offensive ability to hang in an NHL teams’ top six? Does he have the physical particulars to be a checker? Cornel definitely fits the bill as a “tweener”.
Cornel is the 25th-ranked North American skater by NHL Central Scouting, and seems like a good bet to go in the second or third round.
Scouting Reports
A strong, two-way center with built in offense capability, Cornel shows excellent skating and puck handling. The 6-foot-2, 180-pounder’s smarts allow him to make quick, shrewd decisions at both ends of the ice, but is most evident in the offensive end where his vision collaborates with his excellent puck distributing abilities to keep defenders on their heels. Having said that, he doesn’t have an awful lot of offensive potential, and that could be a deterrent when it comes to Cornel.. – Elite Prospects
In his OHL draft year, Eric Cornel was a highly sought after asset from the Upper Canada Cyclones and the Petes invested into that notion by selecting him with the 3rd Overall Pick. Fast forward a season and to be frank, there are a lot of question marks heading into Year 2. The right-shot center has good size at 6-foot-2 but really struggled with the physical side of the game as his 175-pound frame really limited his impact last year. A native of Kemptville, Ont., Cornel has excellent vision and is a very adept playmaker – an impressive combination when you factor in his size. He has the ability to make those around him better and plays a polished game for a young player. The first half will really dictate what Cornel’s sophomore season has in store for him, making it important for him to have a quick start and help the Petes make their way back to respectability. – The Scouting Report
A Good Fit in Columbus?
If he can bulk up and round out his defensive game, Cornel would be a good fit on any NHL team as a two-way winger. If the Jackets could get him in the third round (which would mean that he has slipped) he would be good value.
