NHL Draft Prospect Profile #49: Chase De Leo

The Portland Winterhawks continue to churn out high-end prospects, and Chase De Leo is the latest.

Chase De Leo
Position: C
Current Team: Portland Winterhawks, WHL
Date of Birth: October 25, 1995
Place of Birth: La Mirada, California
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 176 lbs
Shoots: Left

Ranked 36th by Central Scouting, Chase De Leo is a high-energy forward who brings offensive ability and a non-stop motor. He is a member of the powerhouse Portland Winterhawks, so in addition to his own contributions he also brings a winner's attitude. Portland took part in the 2013 Memorial Cup, and just barely missed out on returning this past season.

Size is a bit of a concern, but he's the kind of player who plays bigger than he is.

Scouting Reports

De Leo is a quick, darting skater that plays a creative offensive game. He possesses very quick hands and strong puck skills that allow him to easily gain the offensive zone. He counts on his instincts and positioning in both zones to help him have a positive effect in the game. Size and limited strength are a concern. - Elite Prospects

"Chase is another buzz saw out of Portland. He's a very good skater and pays attention to detail at both ends of the rink. He has quick hands with good vision and offers nice playmaking capabilities. The thing I like is that he really competes in all areas and in key situations and plays bigger than his size." - B.J. MacDonald, NHL.com

A Good Fit in Columbus?

I immediately think of Matt Calvert when watching De Leo. They are both smaller players with a high compete level. De Leo has a higher offensive ceiling however. Additionally, De Leo is a teammate of Columbus prospect Oliver Bjorkstrand. Adding a player like De Leo in the second or third round would be great for the Jackets.
