Saturday’s showdown was mostly a quiet affair for the first 33 minutes. Then the Blue Jackets broke through with what was the only goal of the game. Here’s how it happened.
Here we see the value of a strong forecheck. Scott Hartnell chases the puck into the corner and frees it from the Flyer. Notice Kyle Quincey in the bottom right of the screen, making his way to the wall. Great anticipation from the veteran blue liner, to see where the puck is likely to end up:
The puck gets knocked towards the blue line and Quincey is in the right place to receive it. Everyone is bunched up, so skating the puck in is a smarter move than looking for a quick pass. At this point every other Jacket will start moving to center ice, effectively creating room for Quincey along the board. Quincey’s best move happens next:
