Today in the “A”: Pond Hockey & Sheriff Shanny

There was no major news coming out of Springfield Falcons training camp on Monday. Camp continues this morning at the MassMutual Center as the Birds prepare for tomorrow night’s pre-season game against the Connecticut Whale.

Elsewhere, around the American Hockey League, as part of the NHL’s Winter Classic celebration, it was announced that on January 6th at the Citizen’s Bank Ballpark, the Adirondack Phantoms (formerly the Philadelphia Phantoms) will “host” the Hershey Bears.

Speaking of the Phantoms, former Falcon and Blue Jacket Tom Sestito is in the news this morning. Sestito, trying to make the Philadelphia Flyers, was involved in this melee:

Did I say involved? How about caused the brawl?

If I may be so bold as to borrow one of my favorite Bill Davidge-isms, there’s no question that NHL Sheriff Vice President of Player Safety Brendan Shanahan will take a long, hard look at this situation.

This matter ties into the AHL, as Sestito is likely Adirondack-bound. Stu Bickel (#41 for the Rangers), is also a safe bet to land with the Connecticut Whale. Also, after taking one for the team, Andre Deveaux (Sestito’s victim on the initial charge) was sent down to the Whale after the game.

The Jackets own James Wisniewski, a “repeat offender”, had the book thrown at him. How does Sestito’s hit match up?
