Goal Recap

The Monsters were the first strike tonight 6:22 into the first period. Paul Bittner capitalized on a wide open Wild net.

With a little under five minutes to play in the first, the Wild tied things at one.

Sam Anas was double teamed by the Monsters while heading towards the net. Without looking he sent a pass to Justin Kloos who fired it past Jeff Zatkoff.

The Monsters took the 2-1 lead with 7:26 left in the second period. Cameron Gaunce and Jordan Maletta were involved in a battle with the Wild along the boards. Maletta was able to get the puck to Sam Vigneault who was posted in front of Svedberg. Upon receiving the puck, he popped it over Svedberg’s leg and into the net for the goal.

Two minutes into the third period Carter Camper launched one from the faceoff dot which sailed past Svedberg’s arm. Monsters were now up 3-1 over the Wild.

As we have learned so many times, a 3-1 lead is rarely safe when a Cleveland team is involved.

Twenty seconds later, the Wild cut their deficit to one goal. Cal O’Reilly picked the puck up from behind the boards and passed it to Landon Ferraro who was alone in front of Jeff Zatkoff. Ferraro quickly fired it into the net.

The Wild tied the game six minutes into the third period. Kloos skated away with the puck at the faceoff dot. Gabriel Carlsson laid down thinking Kloos was coming in on Zatkoff’s stick side. Kloos went around Carlsson and beat Zatkoff blocker side.

Regulation ended with both teams tied at three. The Monsters and Wild headed to overtime. Both hopeful they would come out the winner.

A little under three minutes into overtime, Gerald Mayhew scored a breakaway goal through the five-hole of Zatkoff.

Yes, the Wild scored three unanswered goals to win the game.

But Wait! There’s More

Quick Thoughts

  • Nathan Gerbe is an effortless skater and incredibly fast. In fact, he may be a little too fast for his linemates, Carter Camper and Sam Kurker. A few times tonight, Gerbe outmuscled guys who had a good 6” on him. Both Jeff Zatkoff and Nathan Gerbe have been a welcome addition to the team.   /

“It’s great anytime you get guys like those in the lineup. They say the right things in the lockerroom. They do the right things. They prepare the right way. Our guys can learn from how they  prepare and what they do on the ice. They don’t make very many  mistakes and hold themselves accountable for the mistakes they do make.” - Head Coach John Madden

  • Garret Cockerill came to play tonight. No only is he great at  blocking shots, Cockerill was firing the puck towards the net all night. He even created a few key turnovers for the Monsters.
  • Speaking of turnovers, at one point it looked like the ice  was full of bakers not hockey players. This wasn’t just an issue for  the Monsters. The Wild had a turnover issue as well.
  • Every single Monster laid nice, hard, bone rattling hits  tonight. It’s nice to see them turn up the intensity.
  • Two goals by the Wild happened when the Monsters “fell asleep during their shift” and  left the opponent alone in front of the net. /

3 Stars

1st –  Gerald Mayhew (1g, 1a)

2nd –  Justin Kloos (2g, 0a)

3rd – Sam Vigneault (1g, 0a)

Brett Gallant deserves an honorable mention.

In the firt period, a Wild player pushed another Wild player into Svedberg by accident. Gallant and Pallmquist were going at it to Svedberg’s right. Then, Svedberg got up and punched Gallant in the face.

Gallant not going to town on Svedberg if the most impressive thing I’ve seen out of any of the Monsters this season.
