Looking At This Round Of Cuts

Scott Howson announced on twitter this morning that the team has made 7 more cuts.

Paul Dainton, Cody Goloubef, and Allen York have all been assigned to the Falcons, while Cody Bass, Dane Byers, Andrew Joudrey and Nick Drazenovic have been placed on waivers and will be assigned to Springfield once they clear.

The moves bring the Jackets down to 33 players in camp, though Matt Calvert, Theo Ruth, Tomas Kubalik, Derek MacKenzie, Ryan Russell, Mark Dekanich and Kristian Huselius are all currently on the injured list, and James Wisniewski is obviously suspended. That leaves 25 players in camp and eligible to play, so we can probably expect 4-5 more players to be cut this week barring a return to health for some of the injured players (though it’s entirely possible that Ruth or RyRuss could be put on the active list and then assigned.)

The names still on the camp roster who may surprise a few observers would be Martin St. Pierre and John Moore – for totally opposite reasons.

St. Pierre has seen a little time in the NHL in the past few seasons, but he was generally considered a depth guy for Springfield after returning from spending a season in the KHL. Having only played in 1 pre-season game so far, the team could be considering him as a stopgap for Derek MacKenzie, and it’s likely they want to give him at least one more look in game action before making that decision.

John Moore, on the other hand, though a highly anticipated prospect, was expected to need more seasoning in Springfield – his perfomance so far this pre-season hasn’t been bad, but after being scratched from last night’s game it seemed an indication that he might be likely to go down to Springfield today. Moore is a right  left handed shot, and could be in consideration for filling the gaps left by the Wisniewski suspension, but if so he will almost certainly be in the #7 slot, allowing others to move up.
