Highlight Recap, Game #49- Blue Jackets at Bruins

Torts was out. Bob was out. Sorry for the short introduction, but I sat down to write this recap 3 minutes before the game started because I spent my entire afternoon making pulled pork. In all fairness, it’s delicious. Let’s get to the highlights!

FIRST PERIOD HIGHLIGHTS

Your CBJ starters: Joonas Korpisalo, Matt Calvert, Gregory Campbell, Rene Bourque, Ryan Murray, Seth Jones

Early pressure for the Bruins, who registered 3 shots in the first 90 seconds.

Boston carried all possession early, skating rings around Columbus. The most consistent play early was from the Blue Jackets’ 4th line.

CHANCE!! Boone Jenner redirected a chance from Seth Jones at 4:20, but it went just wide.

CHANCE! Fedor Tyutin saw a wrist shot saved by Jonas Gustavsson at 5:30.

SAVE! Jimmy Hayes was denied at 6:20 by Korpisalo.

End to end action late in the period, with no real dangerous chances for either team.

The period ended in a 0-0 tie, with Columbus outshooting Boston 13-11.

SECOND PERIOD HIGHLIGHTS

Bruins goal. After a neutral zone turnover, Brad Marchand scored on a backhand to put the Bruins ahead 1-0 at 0:32. Assists went to Ryan Spooner and Patrice Bergeron. It was a 3-on-2, and Marchand outreached Ryan Murray to tap it home.

CHANCE!! Gustavsson saved a Brandon Saad shot following a slick Jack Johnson pass, and then immediately denied Alexander Wennberg at 5:15.

BLUE JACKETS GOAL! Dalton Prout buried his first off season at 6:58 following a set play on a faceoff. Assist went to William Karlsson.

BLUE JACKETS GOAL! Kerby Rychel redirected one home at 10:08 to tie the game. The goal was assisted by Justin Falk.

Credit the Blue Jackets, who showed great resilience after going down 2-0 early in the second. Excellent response from the team.

Boston power play. Scott Hartnell went off for goaltender interference at 15:56.

Boston’s power play is no slouch. They move, they skate, the puck flies around. It’s quite marvelous to watch.

Loui Eriksson went off at 15:25 for holding Seth Jones, leading to 31 seconds of 4 on 4 before a Blue Jackets power play.

Columbus didn’t generate any real danger and Boston successfully killed the penalty, allowing no shots on goal.

Alexander Wennberg took a shot on his ankle at 18:00, and was in significant discomfort.

Bruins power play. Ryan Murray, jumping on the ice to relieve Wennberg, took a hooking penalty at 18:06.

On the penalty kill, Seth Jones absolutely leveled Torey Krug.

The period ended with the score tied at 2, and with Columbus outshooting Boston 23-20. Boston would have six seconds of a man advantage to start the third period.

THIRD PERIOD HIGHLIGHTS

Columbus successfully finished the kill.

Alexander Wennberg was out for the start of the third, missing no time after his ankle injury.

SAVE! After a neutral zone turnover, Korpisalo made an outstanding save on Patrice Bergeron at 1:00.

End to end action with Boston having the better of possession, but no real dangerous chances through the 6:00 mark.

Boston power play, their 4th of the night. At 6:46, Gregory Campbell went off for hooking.

Columbus successfully killed the penalty.

Not much happened in this period. Matt Beleskey his Gregory Campbell pretty hard.

Blue Jackets on the power play!! Kevan Miller went off for holding at 14:40.

CHANCE!! With the puck loose in front of the net, no one was able to redirect it home.

Columbus failed again on the power play. They had not registered a shot on goal on 3 power play opportunities.

CHANCE! At 17:59, and a mad scramble in front of the net, Zdeno Chara laid down and blocked the Boston net.

POWER PLAY! Dennis Seidenberg went off for slashing at 19:55.

With the score tied at 2, we went to overtime (to the detriment of the tank).

BONUS HOCKEY HIGHLIGHTS

Columbus began overtime with 1:54 of a man advantage.

CHANCE!! Scott Hartnell saw his effort denied at 0:48.

CHANCE! Nick Foligno found Brandon Dubinsky, who put his effort wide.

Boston killed the penalty.

Boston power play. Columbus was charged with too many men on the ice at 2:17. Of course they were. Brandon Saad didn’t get off the ice because he was too busy having words with Chara.

Columbus killed the penalty.

After no goal, the teams would go to a shootout.

CBJ: Cam Atkinson denied, Brandon Dubinsky denied

Boston: Ryan Spooner scores, Patrice Bergeron denied, Torey Krug scores

FINAL: Columbus Blue Jackets 2, Boston Bruins 3

THREE STARS

*** Kerby Rychel

** Joonas Korpisalo

QUICK THOUGHTS

Congratulations to Dalton Prout on his first goal of the season.

Credit the response shown by the Jackets after giving up 2 quick goals. The fight back was encouraging.

Alexander Wennberg had a solid night.

The penalty kill was absolutely excellent tonight. The power play was very not excellent.
