Game #78 Recap: Jackets kick off final road trip with 3-0 shutout loss

After beating Sebastian Aho and the New York Islanders last night in historic fashion, the Jackets had under 24 hours to prepare for their matchup with Sebastian Aho and the Carolina Hurricanes.

First Period

So, fun fact, I didn’t realize this game started at 5:00 until 5:00, when I got the notification from the CBJ app on my phone. Apparently the Jackets didn’t either, as Andrei Svechnikov scored 17 seconds in to give the Hurricanes the lead.

HURRICANES GOAL – Andrei Svechnikov from Jordan Martinook and Brady Skjei – 0:17 1st Period

The rest of the period wasn’t much better, as the Jackets were pretty thoroughly outplayed for most of it. They had a couple decent chances, including a couple pings off the posts and David Jiricek leading a rush up ice, but overall Carolina dominated. They’d end the period up in shots 13-5, and after Sebastian Aho scored 17 seconds into a Powerplay, up in goals 2-0.

HURRICANES POWERPLAY GOAL – Sebastian Aho from Jake Guentzel and Teuvo Teravainen – 11:45 1st Period

Second Period

The middle frame was better, but the Hurricanes still smothered the CBJ throughout. The period started with three calls against the Jackets, resulting in Columbus needing three big kills, including a 48-second 5-on-3. After that, it was decently even, but Carolina was consistently buzzing in the offensive zone and generating chances, while the Jackets’ looks were much further in between. Still 2-0.

Third Period

So you know how one of these teams is fourth in the league and could conceivably win the President’s trophy? And the other is 29th? Yeah, it was pretty apparent.

The Hurricanes let the Jackets have their rushes, but in terms of actually time in the offensive zone, it was all Carolina. The Jackets had a powerplay, it sucked, the Canes had chances galore, and Malcolm Subban somehow stopped all but one of them. Overall, a great game from him in his CBJ debut.

HURRICANES GOAL – Teuvo Teravainen from Jaccob Slavin – 13:53 Third

Overall, the Canes were content to just more or less smother the Jackets and run out the clock. Back at it Tuesday in Tampa.
