Game 1 (X-SS) Recap: Not as Much Fun in Winnipeg

You’ll have to forgive us, this recap isn’t going to be on the same level as the one for the game in Columbus. We didn’t have any boots on the ground up in the ‘Peg, and we weren’t able to watch the entire stream online. By the sound of it though, that’s probably a good thing. The final score of this half of the split-squad matchup was 6-1 Jets, a beatdown equally as ugly as the one the Jackets put on the Jets in Columbus.

You don’t put much stock in a preseason game, especially the first one of the year. Let’s take a look at some of the highlights (and lowlights) from last night, because quite simply that’s all we have to work with at this point!

During the second intermission of the game in Columbus we were treated to some audio of this game, and right off the bat we heard Bobby Mac describe

Dustin Byfuglien

taking runs at

Derick Brassard

and

Tomas Kubalik

. Free agent signee

Cody Bass

, likely ticketed for Springfield, came to their defense and dropped the mitts with Byfuglien. Another fight broke out shortly after between

Dane Byers

and

Mark Stuart

.

The Jackets got into penalty trouble early, and it was a common theme throughout the game. They finished with 90 penalty minutes on the night. The Jets made the Jackets pay on the man advantage early in the first, when Paul Postma scored on Curtis Sanford.

1-0 Jets.

Cody Bass dropped the gloves again later in the first period, this time going toe-to-toe with Troy Bodie. Bass will likely be a leader in Springfield, and his willingness to stick up for teammates shows his character.

Winnipeg’s first round pick Mark Scheifele put the Jets up 2-0 later in the first. By all accounts, he was a beast this game, coming away as the game’s first star. I was a bit skeptical on draft day when the Jets picked him, I thought that maybe they take him a little early, but he is looking like a very good pick at this point.

End of the first, 2-0 Jets.

Top Columbus prospect Ryan Johansen gave the Jackets some hope in the second period, putting one past goalie Ondrej Pavelec. Johansen continues to impress, and is making a real case to be a Blue Jacket on opening night. One of the players he’s battling for a spot in camp- Derick Brassard -finished with a -4 on the night. Ugly.

2-1 Jets.

Later in the second, Scheifele found Kevin Clark in front, putting the Jets up 3-1. This turned out to be the nail in the coffin for the Jackets.

Another fight broke out in the second, and who was involved for the Jackets? You guessed it- Cody Bass. His third fight of the night was against Patrice Cormier. I’m sure he was icing his knuckles long after the game ended.

3-1 Jets.

Ivan Telegin scored for the Jets to put them up 4-1, and Scheifele scored again to make it 5-1. Jets captain Andrew Ladd completed the rout to make it a 6-1 final.

There wasn’t much to take from this game from a Columbus perspective, let’s all enjoy the win in Columbus, and look forward to the home game against the Caps Wednesday night.

Final Score: Jets 6 Columbus 1

Standard Bearers:

Mark Scheifele. He had a great game for the Jets. He endeared himself to the home crowd and was making things happen offensively all night long.
Dustin Byfuglen. He got under the Jackets skin early, and the couldn’t recover. He’ll be great for the Jets.
Ryan Johansen. The only goal scorer for the CBJ, he continues to make a push for a roster spot.
Bottom of the Barrel

  • Columbus Blue Jackets: It was a parade to the box for Columbus, they couldn’t establish any momentum as they were always killing penalties. Derick Brassard had a rough night.

File this one away, Jacket fans. It’s only the beginning of the preseason, and this one ended almost as it should have, with a fired-up Jets squad playing in their home building for the first time since the mid-90s.
