Trade deadline can be both fun and exhausting. It hurts to see your favorites go but it’s also nice to see where former players end up.

Cody Corbett
Trade: The Colorado Avalanche traded Cody Corbett to the Washington Capitals for goaltender Joe Cannata.
Cody Corbett caught the eye of the Colorado Avalanche during the 2013-14 season while playing with the Edmonton Oil Kings(WHL). His 17 goals and 61 points that season set a team record for most goals and points scored by a blue-liner in a season. Over three seasons with the Oil Kings, Corbett tallied 129 points making him the top career point scorer among team defenders.
The Avalanche signed Corbett to a three-year, entry-level contract in March of 2014.
At the start of the 2014-15 season, Corbett was assigned to the Lake Erie Monsters. Over the course of 47 games, he notched three goals and three assists.
Corbett left Cleveland when the Avalanche changed their affiliation to the San Antonio Rampage.
The past two seasons, Corbett’s time has been split between the ECHL and AHL. In 87 games with the organization, Corbett scored 12 goals and 31 assists.
Steve Oleksy
Trade: The Pittsburgh Penguins traded Steve Oleksy, Eric Fehr, and a fourth round 2017 draft pick to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Frank Corrado.
The Lake Erie Monsters signed Steve Oleksy to a PTO in March of 2011. He would stay with the team through their playoff run. Between regular season and playoffs, Oleksy played in 20 games tallying five assists.
At the start of the 2011-12 season, Oleksy started back at his old team, the Idaho Steelheads. Fourteen games into the season, Oleksy joined the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. He would spend the rest of the season, including playoffs, with the Tigers.
In July 2012, Oleksy signed a one-year AHL contract with the Hershey Bears. Impressed with Oleksy’s grit and ability to create plays, the Washington Capitals signed him to a three-year, two-way contract with a month left in the season.
For the next few years, Oleksy would bounce between the Capitals and Bears.
Oleksy hit the free agency market in 2015 and was signed by the Pittsburgh Penguins. He would spend most of his time with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Over 79 games with the WBS Penguins, Oleksy tallied three goals and 21 assists.
In the offseason, Oleksy runs the Eastside Elite Hockey league.
Kevin Shattenkirk
Trade: The St. Louis Blues traded Kevin Shattenkirk and Pheonix Copley to the Washington Capitals for Zach Sanford, Brad Malone, a 2017 first round pick, and conditional picks.
The Colorado Avalanche drafted Kevin Shattenkirk in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. Shattenkirk did not sign a contract with the organization until April 2010, after Boston University was bounced from the playoffs. He would finish the season with the Lake Erie Monsters, playing in three games and tallying two assists.
Ten games into the 2010-11 season, Shattenkirk was recalled by the Colorado Avalanche. The NHL was so impressed with his play they named Shattenkirk to the 2011 All-Star game. Not even a month later, Shattenkirk was traded with Chris Steward to the St. Louis Blues for Erik Johnson, Jay McClement, and a conditional first round pick.
Shattenkirk would become a staple in the Blues organization. He was a positive presence both on and off the ice.
Shattenkirk played in 425 games with the Blues scoring 59 goals and 199 assists. While the Blues made several appearances in the playoffs, Shattenkirk never had the honor of hoisting the Stanley Cup over his head.
Brad Malone
Trade: The Washington Capitals traded Brad Malone, Zach Sanford, a 2017 first round pick, and conditional picks to the St. Louis Blues for Kevin Shattenkirk and Pheonix Copley.
Brad Malone was drafted by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, the same year as Kevin Shattenkirk.
Malone would spend the next four years playing college hockey for the University of North Dakota. While there he would tally 85 points.
In April of 2011, Malone signed a two-year contract with the Avalanche. Malone would finish out the season in Cleveland.
Over the next four seasons, Malone would spend time playing for both the Monsters and the Avalanche. In 219 games with the Avalanche organization, Malone notched 33 goals and 57 assists.
The Carolina Hurricanes signed Malone to a two-year contract during the 2014 free agency. Two seasons later he signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Washington Capitals. Malone would be assigned to the Hershey Bears where he would tally 20 points in 52 games.
