Springfield never gave up in the game, but in the end they were baffled for the second time in ten days by the trap that is Devils hockey.
The Falcons, who started off the season hot, have hit some mid-season doldrums. The Birds are just 4-5-1 in their last ten games. Worse yet is the fact that they are leaving points on the table against teams that they should be beating.
Brad Larsen has referred to the deep rosters leaguewide this season as “AHL on steroids”. He’s absolutely right, despite the awkward PED reference. What it has done, it has increased the level of parity – at least among the Eastern Conference clubs, where the Falcons play all 76 of their regular season games.
That parity has seen the Devils go from doormats to right in the thick of things. Albany has chalked up an 8-3-1-1 mark since December 1st. Ironically, that run has come without New Jersey sniper Adam Henrique. Henrique tore the UCL in his left thumb in late November and has been out of the Albany lineup since.
The lone Falcons goal on Saturday was tallied by Cam Atkinson. Cam continues to rack up the points, and in a relatively short time, is approaching top ten status as far as all time Falcons stats.
Allen York performed adequately in goal as he faced former collegiate opponent Keith Kinkaid in the Albany nets. York played for RPI, while Kinkaid played for nearby Union College.
The Falcons close out this weekend’s three-in-three on Sunday afternoon in Providence. Faceoff time is 3:05PM.
