Atkinson Goes Pro

After his Boston College Eagles were eliminated in an upset loss to Colorado College on Friday, Jackets’ prospect Cameron Atkinson had a decision to make: Return for his senior year, or end his time at BC and go pro?

Today, it has been announced by Aaron Portzline that the 21 year old winger has made his choice, signing his entry level contract with the Blue Jackets today. Atkinson will be assigned to finish the year in Springfield, and it is likely that he will start next season in the AHL, though it’s certainly possible that he could push for a spot on the main club.

A 2008 6th round selection, the Riverside, CT native exploded last year for 30 goals and 23 assists in 42 games on the way to BC’s national title, then followed it up with 31 goals and 21 points in 38 games this season.

On the small side at 5′ 8″ and 165 lbs, Atkinson has exceptional speed and scoring abilities, and plenty of competitive fire to make up for his smaller stature.

With Calvert, Atkinson, and Ryan Johansen, the franchise may have a future top six scoring line getting ready to break into the NHL over the next year or two.

Welcome to Columbus, Cam. We look forward to seeing what you do next.
