2022-23 Season

Dumais had the biggest leap from last year’s ranking, rising all the way from 23rd into the top 10. Looking at the numbers, it’s no surprise why. Dumais had scored 109 points in 68 games in his pre-draft season, so it was a big of a surprise that someone with that production fell to the middle rounds. Clearly most teams were put off by his small stature.

Fortunately, the Blue Jackets’ faith was rewarded by an even more productive post-draft season. Dumais averaged over 2 points per game, with 54/86/140 in 64 regular season games. His Halifax Mooseheads also reached the finals of the QMJHL playoffs, with Dumais scoring 5/16/21 in 15 games before falling to fellow Jackets farmhand James Malatesta.

While Malatesta earned individual accolades in the playoffs and Memorial Cup, Dumais collected plenty of regular season hardware. He led the Q in assists and points and earned the MVP award. He was a first team all-star in both the Q as well as the entire CHL.

2023-24 Outlook

Dumais is another prospect whose ideal development path will be hindered by the absurd and outdated NHL/CHL agreement. This rule prevents players drafted out of the CHL from leaving for the AHL prior to turning 20. Therefore if Dumais can’t earn a spot on the Jackets roster out of training camp, he will have to return to Halifax for the entire season. Does he have anything left to prove there? Clearly not. Hopefully he can keep his focus, round out his game, and get the Mooseheads back to the championship round.
