2020 NHL All Star Game: Seth Jones represents Columbus Blue Jackets as Metro Division fails to defend their crown

The 2020 NHL All Star Game has come and gone, and Seth Jones was the sole representative for the Columbus Blue Jackets who was healthy and able to attend the festivities. Joonas Korpisalo, while named to the game, is still recovering from his knee injury and was unable to attend.

Seth Jones, however, did an admirable job representing the Blue Jackets. Here’s what happened.

Skills Competition

Seth Jones was featured in the Hardest Shot competition. While he was the only player in the competition to fail to break 100 MPH with his shot, I submit that none of the people criticizing him on twitter would be willing to step in front of his shot.

Here’s the video of Jones:

Other than that, Al MacInnis can still shoot the puck hard (maybe, that number looked fudged), and Mat Barzal took down Connor McDavid in fastest skater in a legitimate upset.

All Star Game

The Metro division faced off against the Atlantic division in the first game (or period, however you want to define it) of the night.

In his previous two NHL All Star appearances, Jones combined to register 4-2-6 along with a +10. How would he do tonight?

First Game

Hey, it turns out the Metro is good and Seth Jones is elite. Who knew.

(Also elite: the Dayton Flyers. They beat the Richmond Spiders Saturday night and are now 17-2 on the season, check them out sometime)

The Atlantic Division jumped out to a 2-0 lead before John Carlson scored the first goal for the Metro on a one timer from Mat Barzal. Seth Jones saw his first shot denied from the slot by Frederick Andersen of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Nico Hischer scored the game tying goal and then the teams traded possession with no real chances until TJ Oshie scored with 4:31 remaining the first half of the first game as he picked a corner and sniped it home. Seth Jones had an assist on the Oshie goal.

With 3:56 remaining, Seth Jones doubled the Metro lead as he walked past Victor Hedman and roofed it past Andersen.

Moments later, Anthony Duclair scored for the Atlantic. What a season for Duclair, who has 21 goals this season for the Ottawa Senators. Great for him. David Pastrnak scored on a breakaway to tie the game at four for the Atlantic. After the first half of the period, the teams were tied at four as Braden Holtby and Frederick Andersen were relieved of duty by Tristan Jarry and Andrei Vasilevskiy.

Seth Jones started a breakout play that eventually led to Nico Hischer’s second of the game as the Metro took a 5-4 lead.

After a turnover in the defensive zone, the Atlantic tied the game at 5 as Jonathan Huberdeau (now the all time points leader for the Florida Panthers, who knew?) scored. Seth Jones was denied by Andrei Vasilevskiy seconds before Victor Hedman gave the Atlantic a 6-5 lead with 4:10 to go in the game. Anthony Duclair scored 20 seconds later to give the Atlantic a 7-5 lead.

David Pastrnak scored a third goal on the empty net to take an 8-5 lead with 54.5 to go for his hat trick. With the net pulled, Anthony Duclair was able finish his hat trick as well as the Atlantic took a 9-5 lead.

With the Metro falling 9-5, Seth Jones’ night ended as he posted 1-3-4 for the Metro. Thanks for representing the Jackets so well, Seth!

Second Game

The hometown Central Division faced off against the Pacific in game two, looking to join the Atlantic as first time winners under this format. The Pacific jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the Central tied the game 4-4 at the break. Leon Draisaitl capped his hat trick as the Pacific took a 7-5 lead with 6:26 to go in the second half of game two. The Pacific won the second game 10-5 to advance to championship.

Green Day was awesome, haters to the left.

Third Game

Brady and Matthew Tkachuk met in the final game, in case anyone wanted a meteor to strike the arena.

The St Louis crowd sung Country Road with 5 minutes to go, and I’m here for it.

The Pacific took a late 5-4 lead and were able to hang on to win the All Star game by blocking shots (!) as the Atlantic and Central still failed to win the NHL All Star championship. David Pastrnak was named MVP in a losing effort.

Final

Atlantic Division 5 Pacific Division 4
