2014 NHL Draft Prospect Profile #42 – Brent Moran

Brent Moran
Position: G
Current Team: Niagara IceDogs, OHL
Date of Birth: July 5, 1996
Place of Birth: Ottawa, Ontario
Height: 6’4″
Weight: 181 lbs
Catches: Left

Moran is the third-ranked North American goaltender by Central Scouting, and fits the mold of the modern goaltender- tall and athletic. He split time in the Niagara net this past season with 20 year old Chris Festarini, with Moran getting the greater share of the starts. It’ll be Moran’s net next season.

Scouting Report

“He has a very big presence, especially on initial shots. He’s very quick for his size and his technical ability is very good. He has strong legs which allow him to push off his post and move laterally very quickly. He plays most of his game in the paint, and with his size you don’t see many holes; he gets his body in front of a lot of shots.”- Al Jensen, NHL Central Scouting

A Good Fit in Columbus?

Unless a team really likes him, Moran is most likely a second or third rounder. The Jackets have good depth at the goaltender position, so it’s unlikely they’d use a top-90 pick on one. That said, if he’s taken he’ll join a group that includes Oscar Dansk, Anton Forsberg and Joonas Korpisalo. If the Jackets could “hit” on even one of those four, it would be a success.
