Scott Mayfield finished his second season with the USHL Youngstown Phantoms, and his drop-off offensively (10 goals to 7, 22 points to 16, and a -4 rating to -18) saw his rating slip as well. He had a midterm rank of 15 among North American skaters, but Central Scouting has him ranked as the 24th North American skater heading into the draft. Mayfield was on the Gold Medal 2010 US World Junior A Challenge team, and was selected tournament MVP and to the first all-star team for the tournament. Mayfield has committed to the University of Denver for the fall of 2011.

Scouting Report (NHL.com):

“Scott plays the body well and is physical but not in an overly rambunctious way. He can close off the forechecker up high and is controlled, poised and calm in his play. He plays like a seasoned veteran. Scott has a smooth, strong and effortless stride, his passes are crisp and he sees the ice well. He has a very good wrist shot and controls the play from the point on the power play.”

Why he’d be a good fit in Columbus:

In a word, he has the size and right-handed shot to help the Jackets. Mayfield can skate, and make decent passes, and has the size to be a good on-man defender. He probably wont be a Power Play contributor without some additional development, and his numbers bear out the fact that he just didn’t contribute much offensively, which might fly in the face of what Columbus and Scott Arniel are wanting to do defensively. Mayfield saw his numbers regress, so he will definitely require some seasoning before being considered for NHL duty.Scott Mayfield Draft Preview:
