Less than 24 hours after a well-played, tough OT loss to the Blackhawks last night at the United Center, the Blue Jackets regrouped to face the 4-3-0 New York Islanders at Nationwide Arena. Currently, the Islanders stand at 4th in the Metro and Jackets in 5th.
First period:
The game was off to a fast start, with the Islanders hitting the post on a shot in less than two minutes. Jackets counter, but the Islanders draw first blood 8:25 minutes in. 1-0, Mathew Barzal scores for the Isles.
Doesn’t take long for the Jackets to answer — Seth Jones nets his first of the season, assisted by Sonny Milano (who is on fire) and Jacob Lilja (also on fire). 1-1 halfway through the first.
With four minutes left in the fourth, the sales director for Brewdog unveils their newest beer on the jumbotron — an American pale ale aptly named the Cannon Blast. No one is paying me or giving me free beer to say this, although I wish they were — I just like their beer and I’m excited to try this one, plus the unveiling at the game was cool. Brewdog would be dumb not to capitalize on Jackets fans this season, considering they already have a delicious grapefruit IPA named “Elvis Juice.”
Okay, back to hockey. The Jackets are outshooting the Islanders so far — 20-16 in the first quarter — but Islanders are landing their shots more accurately — 11 shots on frame to the Jackets six. Fortunately, Joonas Korpisalo has come up with strong saves on a couple well-placed shots.
Dammit, Michael Dal Colle scored with three minutes left in the period. 2-1 at the end of the first.
Second period:
The only thing of real note in the second period, besides the godforsaken pizza song that was played in lieu of the Kiss Cam (also terrible), was Boone Jenner’s 200th career goal with about three minutes left in the period. He was assisted by Dean Kukan, who notched his first career point against the Islanders.

Third period:
Alrighty. The Blue Jackets are having no issues finding chances right out of the gate — nine shot attempts were made on Greiss in less than three minutes.
One of these has to go in… right? Maybe for other teams, but that logic doesn’t always apply to the Jackets.
Lots of shots taken from both sides, keeping both Korpi and Greiss busy — and the game is getting chippier by the second.

Two minutes left in the period, tied 2-2 — Jackets have 34 shots on goal to the Isles 31.
Period ends with Jackets at 36 shots on goal to the Isles 32. Overtime twice in two nights — classic.

Well, that was fast — Islanders scored in 30 seconds. Jackets fall 3-2.
