Early headlines around the NHL

We may only be four to six games, depending on which team you are looking at, into the season, but there are already some surprise headlines emerging around the league. Let’s take a look at what has stood out so far.

Are the Red Wings good?

The Blue Jackets have felt this one already this season. The Wings are 5-1 with a league-leading goal differential of +15. The DeBrincat-Larkin-Raymond line does seem legitimately good, but there are some warning signs that the early success may not last. First, Detroit ranks 27th in 5v5 CF% at 44.55. That’s not a recipe for long-term success. They have primarily been feeding off of the power play and are tied at the top of the league with nine goals in only six games. Second, their shooting % is off the charts. In all situations, the Wings are shooting at an insane 16.04%. They will likely cool off eventually, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have a chance to be competing for a playoff spot come springtime.

Edmonton? Seattle? Are you awake?

The Oilers have played five games, and Seattle six — both teams have only three points. For Edmonton, their defensive and goalie issues continue to haunt them. Their combined save % thus far is only .868, and their high danger chances for % is an awful 27.78 (13 against, 5 for). As for Seattle, they may be coming down to earth after a great last season. They are shooting 6.11% (they were 2nd last season at 11.57%), and their goaltending has remained about the same.

Hello, Jack Hughes

The man has played only 4 games and already has 10 points. That said, it’s probably wise to pump the brakes here a bit. Similarly to the Red Wings, the Devils have nine power play goals (in four games), and Hughes has seven power play points. Is he good? Yes. Is he going to end up with 150 points? No. Still, watch out for number 86 and the Devils.

The Canes have a goalie problem

Through six games, The Hurricanes have given up a league-leading 30 goals and have a combined save % of .833. To make matters worse, Carolina leads the league in CF%. So far, they are a team that’s playing well, shooting the puck well (shooting % of 13.43), but not able to keep the puck out of their own net. They are 3-3 as a result.
