As we get deeper beyond the depths of these NHL draft prospects, we look at Swedish defenseman Adam Ginning. Ginning has spent the past two seasons playing for Linköping HC in the Swedish Hockey League, scoring four points (one goal, three assists) over that span across 40 games. He had one goal and one assist last season.

Suffice to say, he might not light things up from the offensive side of the spectrum but given his size and strength, he can round out into a good defensive defenseman.

Eyes On The Prize, Patrik Bexel, David St-Louis

Ginning will need a year or two in the SHL before going over to North America, and then a season in the AHL before having a chance of making an impact on the biggest stage. He also needs to build up his upper-body strength that is lacking compared to his lower body, but a full summer of training should really benefit him in that respect, and could also have a positive impact on his skating for next season.

Last Word on Hockey, Ben Kerr

Ginning is more known for his defensive game than his offensive one. He has excellent size, and uses it to his advantage. If a forward comes down his side of the ice with his head down, he can through a big body check. He reads the play well and uses a long, active stick to cut down on passing lanes. Ginning is not afraid to get his body in front of a shot either. He is especially effective on the penalty kill, with strong positioning.

It’s probably going to be a few years, at the very least, before we see Ginning in the NHL. As Patrik Bexel and David St-Louis mention at Eyes On The Prize, Ginning uses his size well such as along the boards and excels in the defensive aspect of the play. But his game is a work in progress.

But he ’s only 18-years-old. Let’s see how he continues to progress in the gym and in the upcoming season with Linköping HC, and possible future stints in the AHL as he continues to grow his game.
