Wait, what…? Mathieu Corbeil on Emergency Recall

When the going gets tough, sometimes the tough just gets weird.

With a growing injury list that had just been bumped to include Jeff Carter (foot) and Marc Methot ( head up ass upper body tweaks”), the Jackets have announced that due to an injury to Curtis Sanford, the team has performed an emergency recall of goaltending prospect Mathieu Corbeil from the Saint John Sea Dogs of the QMJHL.

The recall to Corbeil is due to Allen York already being on the shelf in Springfield, leaving Paul Dainton and Danny Taylor the only options in net for the Falcons. Corbeil is currently 7-2 for former head coach Gerard Gallant, with a .899 save percentage and 2.61 GAA (Edit: Lou has also pointed out that Dainton and Taylor are on AHL / ECHL contracts only right now, making them ineligible for recall.)

The news just keeps getting stranger – but if nothing else, it confirms that Steve Mason will be getting the start tomorrow night. It seems highly unlikely the Jackets would throw a young prospect to the wolves that way, but it does bring up the uncomfortable question of how long this can continue if Mason needs a break, particularly with a back to back later this week.

If Sanford and Dekanich are both potentially down long term, it may be time for Scott Howson to pick up the phone.
