Veini Vehvilainen signs two-way contract with Columbus Blue Jackets

On June 4th, 2019, the Columbus Blue Jackets announced the signing of goaltender Veini Vehvilainen. Originally selected by the Jackets in the sixth round of the 2018 NHL draft, Vehvilainen was given a two-year entry level contract.

The 2018-19 season was a spectacular one for Vehvilainen who was playing for Liiga’s Karpat. He led the league in GAA (1.58), Save Percentage (.933), and shutouts (6).

Many speculate that Vehvilainen will leave Liiga and start the 2019-2020 season with the Cleveland Monsters.

There have been rumblings that Brad Thiessen will be back with the Monsters for the upcoming season. If this is the case, Matiss Kivlenieks will likely be sent to the ECHL for the bulk of the season. Due to a history of the injury bug hitting the Monsters’ goaltenders the past few seasons and for development reasons, the Monsters should roll with three goaltenders in the 2019-20 season. Plus, healthy competition between Kivlenieks and Vehvilainen would force them to bring their “A” game on a nightly basis.
