Today in the "A": Tragedy Touches AHL

These seven men were among the victims of Wednesday's horrific plane crash that took the lives of the KHL Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey club. All seven had played in the American Hockey League.

Throughout my life, in times of loss or sorrow, I've always reminded myself of a theme from a book I read back in college, more than half my life ago. The book was "Your Erroneous Zones" by Dr. Wayne Dyer. The message that I took away from that book:

Life isn't fair.

He was right. Life isn't fair. Never has been and never will be.

Yet while I like to think at this point in my life that I have seen everything that may elicit a strong reaction, then something else comes along.

I sat down to check Twitter and have some lunch on Wednesday when I saw the news of the crash. The lunch went untouched. I literally gasped.

How can this be?

All of us are aware of plane crashes. But an entire professional sports team? And, if it could be any worse, a hockey team?

Unthinkable.

I offer my deepest condolences to anyone affected by this tragedy. I will mourn the losses of these hockey people and airline crew. And I will need to remember that sometimes these things happen because life isn't fair.

In a case like this though, I really wish life was fair.
