Today in the “A”: Sunday Review

Apparently the only point the Falcons picked up this weekend was the only one they really needed. Don’t misunderstand, six out of six would have been much, much better. However, running headfirst into the buzzsaw that is the Norfolk Admirals didn’t help things in the least. Bottom line – the Falcons started the weekend two points out of the eighth and final playoff spot in the East. At the end of the weekend, they remain two points out of the final playoff spot in the East.

Taking a quick look at the Sunday games that have contributed to the logjam around the last playoff spot:

Connecticut 3 at Manchester 2
Scoreless after two periods, all five goals were scored in the third period. Kris Newbury notched his 20th goal, earning the games #1 star.

Syracuse 2 at Albany 1
Yesterday I called this a must win for Syracuse. Brandon McMillan picked up the game winner with just 2:14 remaining in regulation. Recently returned from Anaheim, Iiro Tarkki made 26 saves to backstop the victory.

Worcester 2 at Portland 3 SO
Justin Pogge turned aside 34 of 36 shots in the first 65 minutes. Then he saved three out of four in the shootout, giving Portland the win.

Bridgeport 6 at Providence 3
The undermanned Bruins dropped their fifth consecutive game against the Sound Tigers. Micheal Haley tallied twice in the winning effort.

There is only one game during the upcoming week that can have an effect on the Falcons. A Tuesday evening tilt between Bridgeport and Worcester at the DCU Center in Worcester at 7PM. The Sharks are currently clinging to the final playoff spot, two points ahead of Springfield.
