Today in the “A”: Saturday Highlights, Sunday Previews

The Springfield Falcons dropped their second straight game in Norfolk on Saturday night. After the double dip, the Falcons only lost one point in the playoff race. Out of the eighth spot by two points on Friday morning, after Saturday night’s play, the Birds are just three points out with 18 games to play.

A couple of games that were noteworthy for Springfield:

Adirondack 3 at Albany 2 OT
Matthew Ford scored his 17th goal of the season 3:24 into the extra session and Michael Leighton turned aside 30 of 32 Devils shots to earn the win.

Worcester 5 at Providence 2
The undermanned Bruins dropped their fourth straight game. Mike Moore of the Sharks picked up 2 goals and an assist in the win. After the game, the Boston Bruins recalled Lane MacDermid and Michael Hutchinson due to injuries up top, further exacerbating the P-Bruins.

The Falcons will stop in Hershey for a 5PM game with the Bears. Elsewhere in the Eastern Conference, here are some games that will have playoff implications:

Connecticut at Manchester
The Monarchs will be looking to shake the rust off. They’ve been idle since a 4-3 win over Providence last Sunday. The Whale had a day off also on Saturday after falling 3-2 in Portland on Friday night. Manchester is currently the eighth seed with 61 points (Falcons are at 58).

Syracuse at Albany
The Devils have vaulted ahead of Manchester by virtue of their three points thus far this weekend. The Crunch are four points behind the Falcons, and seven out of a playoff spot. This is a must win game for Syracuse.

Worcester at Portland
Separated by just two points in the playoff race, and both clubs coming off big wins, this game should be a dandy.

Bridgeport at Providence

Playing a powerhouse like Bridgeport probably could not have come at a worse time for the Bruins. Already undermanned, and with two more recalls to Boston, it could be a long afternoon for Providence.
