Today in the “A”: Friday Playoff Scramble

If it’s Friday, it must be time for the AHL clubs to embark on another three-in-three. This weekend, the Springfield Falcons get started in Manchester, NH at 7PM. The Birds return to The Nest for the first time in a couple of weeks to take on Syracuse on Saturday and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Sunday afternoon.

With just 17 games remaining in the Falcons’ regular season, I’ll highlight games of interest as Springfield pursues a playoff push. Tonight, games of interest are:

Norfolk at Adirondack
As fate would have it, Dustin Tokarski was called up by Tampa Bay after victimizing the Falcons last weekend. Norfolk is riding a 12 game winning streak into this game. The Phantoms are tied with the Falcons with 59 points.

Bridgeport at Connecticut

The battle for first place in the Northeast Division. Bridgeport leads the Whale by two points. The Falcons trail Connecticut by 9 points.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton at Providence
The Penguins start a three-in-three of their own against the struggling Bruins. Fourth in the Eastern Conference, the Penguins are playoff bound. The Bruins have dropped five consecutive games and are one point behind Springfield in the standings.

Albany at Syracuse
The Crunch prevailed last weekend in a must win game against Albany. Tonight will be the same on their home ice. Albany is on a mini two game losing skid, and only lead eighth place Worcester by two points (7th in the East).

Portland at Worcester
Welcome to the logjam. Worcester is in eighth with 61 points. Portland is tenth with 60 points. In between them is Manchester, tonight’s Falcons opponent.

I’ll have results and playoff implications for the Falcons as they head down the stretch.
