Today in the “A”: Falcons Set For Weekend

There will likely be many more roster moves among the Columbus Blue Jackets, Springfield Falcons and Chicago Express before next spring arrives.

However, for fans of the Falcons, there may be none more significant than yesterday’s announcement by the Jackets that Alexandre Giroux is on his way to Springfield.

Over the past three seasons, Giroux has become iconic in American Hockey League circles. In that time, he’s been a key factor on two Calder Cup championship teams (Hershey Bears 2009 & 2010). His leadership last season on the Oklahoma City Barons took a worst in the league club (previous year’s edition of the Falcons) and helped the Barons make the playoffs in their first season.

There have been personal achievements also. He’s been Top 2 in AHL scoring over the past three seasons. Giroux was the AHL Most Valuable Player in the ’09-’10 season. Also worth noting is that he has scored 30 or more goals in seven consecutive seasons.

The addition of Giroux also brought to an end the training camp tryouts of Chaz Johnson, Denny Kearney and Tristin Llewellyn.

The Falcons roster has now rounded out at 22 players, as the club prepares for Opening Weekend. First, Friday night in Manchester, NH and Saturday night in Albany, NY.

Falcons roster as of Wednesday evening:
