Today in the “A”: Falcons Opening Night Guests

The Springfield Falcons have announced three more guests for the Opening Night celebration of the 1989-90 and 1990-91 Calder Cup championship teams.

Joining former coach Jimmy Roberts and former broadcaster John Forslund will be:

Rob DiMaio – captain of the ’89-’90 squad. Not the biggest player in size, the gritty center played a total of 894 NHL games after graduating from the “A”.

Kay Whitmore – Whitmore, currently the NHL’s goaltending equipment approval authority, started the ’90-91 campaign as current Dallas Stars broadcaster, Daryl Reaugh’s backup. Once Razor suffered a severe knee injury, Whitmore stepped in and led the Indians with a 22-9-1 record en route to winning the Jack Butterfield Award as Calder Cup playoffs MVP.

Michel Picard – Picard was an absolute sniper in the ’90-’91 season. He set an all time Springfield mark with 56 goals that season. Michel went on to play 166 NHL games. He resurfaced in the “A” as recently as 2004 when he scored 54 points in 75 games with the Grand Rapids Griffins.
