The Roster Viking Continues to Pillage: Calvert Locked Up

It looks like the Roster Viking is finding ways to keep himself busy while the Blue Jackets prepare for their final regular season games. Today, RDS’ Renaud Lavoie broke the news via twitter that the club has signed pending RFA Matt Calvert to a two year, $1,975,000 contract.

It’s a slight raise from Calvert’s entry level deal, and the fact that it’s a one way deal is a clear reward for the hard work Calvert has put in over the last year to rebuild his game after his sophomore slump.

He may never be a profilic scorer, but the pint-sized powerhouse has become one of the team’s most reliable energy forwards, able to play on the second or third lines without an issue, and his relentless forechecking and penalty killing skills have been a major part of the club’s defensive structure.

With the new deal, Calvert is primed to be an important piece of the future, but at a very reasonable cap hit for his role. It’s a smart move that helps preserve room for the other pending free agents.

With Letestu and Calvert secured, you have to think that Cam Atkinson, Artem Anisimov and Sergei Bobrovsky will be the Roster Viking’s next targets – and if he continues to play well, I also wouldn’t be surprised if Blake Comeau’s agent is getting a phone call.
