The Cannon Top 25 Under 25 – #19 Dillon Heatherington

Dillon Heatherington, former second round pick from the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, made his AHL debut last season with the Lake Erie – now Cleveland – Monsters, playing 63 games in the regular season and 15 more in the playoffs while registering 3-16-19 and 0-3-3.

Heatherington is never going to be an offensive force from the blue line the way Zach Werenski is. Heatherington, however, can become a shutdown defenseman who is reliable in his own zone, as well as making exit passes to spring the forwards in transition. Heatherington is also noted for being a reliable penalty killer. A big player at 6-4, 196 pounds, Heatherington has the size to compete at the NHL level.

Outlook for 2016-17

Heatherington will almost certainly begin the season with the Cleveland Monsters as the AHL affiliate looks to defend their Calder Cup championship. That being said, if the Jackets suffer injuries along the blue line this year, look for Heatherington to get a chance to prove himself with Columbus.
