Sonny Milano Signs with Blue Jackets

It’s been talked about often since the NHL Entry Draft, when Columbus made Sonny Milano their first round draft choice- will he honor his commitment to Boston College, or will he playing junior hockey?

After months of speculation, we have our answer:

Milano will almost assuredly play this upcoming season with the Plymouth Whalers of the OHL, who hold his rights. The Whalers have been campaigning for his services by making roster moves, hoping to relieve him of some perceived concerns regarding lack of offensive talent to play with.

I’m biased, but I think this is a good move for him. He’ll have the chance to play a hell of a lot more than he would in college, thanks to the more intense CHL schedule. Plymouth is an excellent program, and has a chance at making some noise in the OHL this season.

Milano will also be in the mix for a roster spot with Team USA at the 2015 World Juniors.

As mentioned, the alternative for Milano was Boston College, a terrific hockey program in its own right. To Milano and his family, however, Plymouth was the more ideal situation. For BC fans, it’s a tough pill to swallow.

The likely path for Milano will see him take part in the Traverse City Prospects Tournament, followed by Columbus training camp. A season or two with the Whalers is expected, followed by some time in the AHL before he makes his debut with the Jackets.
