Shrapnel – 9/4/11

Happy Sunday, and for those of you in the US, we hope you’re enjoying your Labor Day weekend!

For those of you in Canada, you’re probably just looking forward to watching some NFL games today.

Aaron Portzline sat down with Jody Shelley, Derek Dorsett and Jared Boll to talk about the events of this summer. I think the most beautiful and important moment was that Jody reached out to both Derek and Jared to give them a person to call and a chance to talk if they need it, and that he’s been doing the same for other teammates and friends.

You’re a mensch, Jody.

In Nashville, David Legwand took out a full page ad to talk about Wade Belak and to reach out to his family.

Puck Daddy’s newest writer, Harrison Mooney, spent some time predicting the future for this season. His line on Columbus is that “spending money on D is not the same as having good D.” He has a point there, but Jeff Little unintentionally set up a very good counterpoint when he talked about the Tyutin extension and Scott Howson’s general blueprint for what may happen next.

The New York islanders have signed an official partnership deal with a tattoo shop. Newsday reporters are now frantically checking to see if Garth Snow offered them Mark Streit‘s busted shoulder in exchange for a bitchin’ sleeve tat.

Mary offers some tales of mini-mite provocation as Fire That Cannon works on sharing some season previews.

Speaking of the Islanders, Jay Pandolfo, who signed a deal with Springfield last year and appeared for 12 games, has signed a tryout agreement and will come to camp in Long Island. We wish him the best of luck.

Jas continues his look at the Traverse City roster, breaking down the d-men and goalies.

Do you hate Nickelback? You’ll probably like this petition.

The Globe and Mail writes a must-read piece on the NHL’s pill problem.

More post-mortem discussions in Vancover have the Canucks talking about taking a role in help keep order if they stage another large public gathering, but the question of “Is it their responsibility to enforce the law?” is a valid one. A lot of the issue is that the Vancouver PD simply didn’t prepare effectively.

Finally? This is is brilliant. Can’t wait to get paid so I can grab one!
