Shrapnel – 7/7/11

And lo, on the 6th day, Scott Howson rounded out the defense with the addition of Radek Martinek, and the reactions are cautious, due to his injury history, but generally optimistic.

I think LTL put it best: “It sure would be nice to see the gambles fall in our favor, for once.”

All things considered, I think we’ve got a team that can make noise, and Scott Howson feels content for now.

Meanwhile, other teams continue to make moves, including St. Louis, who went out and grabbed a two for one on veterans when they inked Jason Arnott and Jamie Langenbrunner to one year deals. Puck Daddy and PHT have their takes on the signings as well.

The most interesting part of the reaction over at St. Louis Game Time I’ve seen is their fear / prediction that these deals mean that David Perron is unlikely to be part of the team’s roster next season. While I’m not really a fan of our divisional opponents getting better, Perron doesn’t deserve to have his career ended by a concussion at such a young age, either.

Your official new Blue Jackets jersey numbers: Jeff Carter #7, James Wisniewski #21, Mark Dekanich #31, Curtis Sanford #30, Nicholas Drazenovic #42, Aaron Johson #5, John Moore #4, Andrew Joudrey #23, Alexandre Giroux #28, Radek Martinek #2, Ryan Johansen #36, and Cam Atkinson is #38.

Speaking of a division opponent, the Predators appear to be going young on D. It’ll be interesting to see how it works out…but I wouldn’t mind seeing them struggle a bit. We also got another look at their new branding.

Jackets fans dedicated to their in-arena dancing had a scare yesterday when Dancing Kevin announced he hadn’t been contacted by the Jackets for next season, but new head of in-arena entertainment Derek Dawley quickly responded on twitter, and relief was felt through the land.

A great SovSport interview with Evgeni Malkin translated for Puck Daddy by Dmitry Chesnokov.

if Mark Cuban isn’t going to buy the Dallas Stars, can the NHL get him interested in St. Louis?

On the subject of Dallas, some sad news, as it seems their plans for an outdoor preseason game have been quashed.

Eric Smith takes a look at the Jackets’ new roster, and how they may line up.

Many thought Ken Hitchcock would get a look at the Devils new coaching position, but it now seems that Don Lou is more interested in former Habs.

The 2014 winter games (if the NHL goes) are expected to be a showcase for Russian hockey. 2018 has been awarded to South Korea, where they are expected to be a showcase for Richard Park.

Craig Ramsay, former Atlanta coach who will now be an assistant to Kevin Dineen in Florida, is unhappy with how the True North Ownership handled his situation.

Say what you like about Scott Howson’s move for Martinek, but it seems he grabbed one of the best remaining options – the market is getting awfully thin. (Bonus points for referring to Stralman and Lepisto as “offensive-like”.)

That’ll do for today. Just remember, no matter what the note says, there is no delicious candy.
