Shrapnel – 7/5/11

Today, we honor a longstanding holiday tradition: Watching Top Gear and Star Trek Marathons on the couch.

We’ve got a fair bit of speculation and news on the Jackets front, but so far no major changes in the tail end of the holiday weekend.

At Jackets Report, Rob has been making a case for Scott Hannan as a possible answer on the team’s blue line, while the Dispatch takes a look at the team’s deepening talent pool, and Michael Arace discusses’s how the Jackets gave Rick Nash a heck of a birthday present over the past few weeks.

A hat tip to P.K. Subban and former Hab Georges Laraque who spent their holiday in Haiti as part of ongoing earthquake relief efforts.

A neat piece of CBJ memorabilia – a signed Andrew Murray jersey from Montreal’s Bob Gainey jersey retirement night.

Alexander Ovechkin is back in the US! Or Canada. Whichever?

A nice interview by Greg Drinnan with Jackets’ prospect Austin Madaisky on Development Camp, cooking class, and his previous injuries.

Brian Burke spent the opening of free agency visiting troops deployed to Afghanistan. He was given a rather nasty razzing for it by the Canadian Press. Burke answered his critics yesterday – you can see reactins to his remarks at both Puck Daddy and PHT. For what it’s worth? Good for Burke, and to hell with the critics. Some things are a lot bigger than hockey.

Before the draft, Yahoo’s “Buzzing The Net” blog did an interview with Jackets’ prospect Boone Jenner. (Stick tap to CBJProspects.)

The Winnipeg Jets are being awfully quiet after making such a big splash…

Meanwhile, speaking of blue line options, Tomas Kaberle is still on the market. Is he a good fit here? I’m not so sure, but you have to admit that he has a great deal of talent, and that talent might be coming down on a discount the more he waits on the market….
