Shrapnel - 7/30/11

What have we got for you today? Good question!

Let's start off with the Dispatch's Michael Arace continuing the farewell to veteran Columbus sports reporter Larry Larson. Today, he's talking with ex-Blue Jackets head coach Dave King, and his relationship with Larry during his tenure here.

Scratch off another arbitration - the Devils have come to terms with Zach Parise on a one year deal - the bad news for Devils fans is that contract leaves him a UFA next season, but it does sound like the team will keep working towards a multi-year deal. We'll see how it shakes out.

Down in Nashville, the clock keeps inexorably ticking on Shea Weber...

The Fox Sports summer tour hit Toronto yesterday, to visit with Steve Mason and some of his old chums. In addition to checking out his childhood rink, Mase also took the guys out to a Jays game.

The St. Pete Times Forum is getting a facelift to go with the new look of the Lightning, including an expanded concourse, a pipe organ, and tesla coils installed on the scoreboard that will shoot lightning up to 25 feet into the air. The Jackets may need to up the ante....I'm thinking we add another cannon.

Light the Lamp muses about real estate, and certainly isn't  stalking a certain new acquisition.

It increasingly appears Mike Modano's career has come to an end.

Do you like in Trumbull or Mahoning counties? Can't get the CBJ on the TV? Can't get any hockey on your TV? Tom Reed would like to hear from you.

We all love watching big hits and guys getting banged around the corners - but is that really good defense? Justin Bourne says no.

Are the Blue Jackets and Bronzer a big hit this summer? Mary over at Fire The Cannon thinks so.

Looks like the Kings have moved on to formally filing grievances against the Oilers over the Ryan Smyth trade/boondoggle.

Per Aaron Portzline, the Jackets have added to their amateur scouting staff with former NCAA coach Greg Drechsel. Seems like a smart move, given how many of Columbus' prospects have gone the NCAA route rather than Canadian Juniors.

The Manitoba Moose are officially the St. John's IceCaps.

A few Twitpic specials: Adam Foote getting some self-help, the Jackets' Ryan Holtmann enjoys a sandwhich, and we've got some special CannonFest deals for you!

Finally, could Nikolay Zherdev end up in Winnipeg? Apparently he thinks it could be a good fit.
