Shrapnel – 7/21/11

There’s simply no other way to say it – with the official introduction of Jeff Carter and James Wisniewski to Columbus yesterday, there was a buzz around town, and it dominated every level of coverage for the team.

If you haven’t seen it already, here’s the press conference from the Jackets’ website, while we had coverage from the dispatch, ESPN, PHT, Puck Daddy, and even Columbus Alive.

Eric Smith, formerly of Fox Sports Ohio, also provided video interviews, and a full transcript of the press conference went up on Puck Rakers.

Whew! Can you believe there’s actually more to talk about?

In non-hockey related news, we ask a moment of silence for the space shuttle program after STS-135 returns home today. Thank you to all of the men and women who made it possible for us to go into space, and be a little more in touch with the universe around us.

Back down to earth, with all the excitement around the team, it’s only natural to wonder how long until the regular season starts, and now there is a website to help.

Much like Columbus, there has been a lot of buzz about the moves made by the Buffalo Sabres since Terry Pegula took over, and fans in the city are speaking with their wallets.

On our side of things, DBJ reminds you about the open house tonight at Nationwide, and that now is a great time to jump on board here in Columbus.

Former Blackhawk Chris Campoli is now a UFA after the Blackhawks chose to walk away prior to arbitration. On the one hand, Scott Howson has said he’s primarily looking for another top six forward, but Campoli might be another piece of depth for the Jackets’ blue line, particularly if he might be willing to take a cheap 1 year deal to showcase himself.

CBJ blog takes a minute to talk about Chris Osgood and his HOF chances, and Travis points out that he’s good, but not that much better than his peers.

The Nashville Predators, on the other hand, are seeing some financial trouble ahead with their “big three”, so PHT asked several Preds bloggers who might be expendable.

Hockey’s Future has a review of the Jackets’ 2011 draft class. Call me crazy, but I like the fact that a lot of these guys are viewed as having something to prove. Hungry, motivated prospects make me think they’ll have a better chance of making an impact than someone who is regarded as a “Can’t Miss”.

The Anaheim Ducks are offering another player with a problematic past a second chance, signing Mark Bell to a one year deal while they wait to see what Teemu Selanne chooses to do with his future.

An interesting case from Puck Daddy – will Evander Kane be allowed to wear the #9 that the original Jets retired for Bobby Hull?

Finally, the Capitals repeat they won’t be trading Alexander Semin, but not many people are listening…
