Shrapnel – 7/14/11

With the news that Kristian Huselius will be out for four to six months, discussion has started to turn to alternatives. Puck Daddy offers some suggestions via free agency, and Vinny Prospal strikes me as being a decent idea, assuming he’s recovered from his own recent injuries. Jeff Little, on the other hand, has thoughts about Wojtek Wolski. He’s certainly an offensive option, but he’s a streaky player. Could be a gamble.

On the other hand, as Jeff said, Scott Howson is the roster ninja. Perhaps he’ll surprise us all.

Kind of a nice bit of news here – a bunch of current and former members of the New York Rangers are working to support the Islanders‘ attempt to get a new arena.

We’ve got another Blue Jackets blog springing up – the amazing unimaginatively named CBJ Blog, who steps onto the stage by opening fire at contracts circumventing the salary cap.

The Nashville Predators unveiled their new jerseys at the Skate Of The Union event, and On The Forecheck was there. Something about the “Behold the Gold!” slogan makes me giggle. Icethetics also has their own reaction to the new threads.

So before all the surprising / bad news, we had yesterday’s Dispatch chat. I have a feeling the questions at next week’s will be a bit more…focused.

Speaking of lingering injuries, it seems Chris Pronger is unlikely to be ready for the start of the season in Philly. After all the other upheavals this offseason, that’s bad news for the Flyers, who really could use some stability.

We mentioned the other day that the Jackets would not retain their affiliation with Fort Wayne in the ECHL. Yesterday, the team announced their new ties to the Chicago Express.

Finally, it appears that a Toronto radio host used an anti-gay slur to describe newly acquired Cody Franson. Disgusting behavior by someone who should be held to a higher standard.
