Shrapnel – 6/14/11

So apparently Roberto Luongo has a chip in his skull. It was put there by some black project Canadian military experiment to boost reflexes to superhuman levels, making him the perfect goaltender and to help ensure a cup finally came back to Canada.

Unfortunately, it works on the same frequency as the TD Garden PA system….oops.

Seriously, after Count Chokeula rose up and enveloped the Canucks in his velvety cape of failure, we’ve got one last shot for all the marbles – the first time Boston has even been in a Stanley Cup Finals Game 7, while Vancouver…well…let’s just say they’ve been here before. One way or another, a city will celebrate on Wednesday night, while another city will lament.

Over at Heart of A Jacket, Alison took some time to talk about Craig Rivet, and the changing of the guard.

Tapeleg, on the other hand, gives some thoughts into why Mike Milbury still has a job.

With the news that the Dallas Stars are close to officially announcing that current Texas Stars coach Glen Gulutzan will be their next head coach, Portzline took some time at Puck Rakers to look at former Jackets’ head coach Ken Hitchcock’s remaining coaching options for next season. I’m a little surprised he doesn’t list the Winnipeg _______ as a potential option – after all, they have announced a coaching search.

If you’re a hockey fan, you read Puck Daddy.  But do you know how it got started? There’s a great interview with Wysh over at The Checking Line.

In more good news for hockey, Rule 48 was officially amended to remove “blindside” and simply apply to all hits to the head by the competition committee. I hope the board of governors and NHLPA will respond in kind to ratify the change.

Steph Greegor at The Other Paper had another sit down with a Jacket spending his offseason in Columbus – this time it was Derek Dorsett, and he also did a video interview to answer fan questions.

One way or another, the Cup will be handed out Wednesday, in a ritual that has become ingrained into hockey culture almost as deeply as the ice. Travis Hughes compared that to the rather limp and tepid way the NBA deals with championships, and reflects on how important that celebration is.

Over at TMM, Jeff took some more time to look at the rumor mill, while we got some interesting information out of CSN Philly that Howson and Holmgren were originally discussing a trade package that would have included Steve Mason.

For every Mason hater out there, it may be worth considering that if other teams are contacting us about trading him? There may be something to keeping him.

Meanwhile, speaking of young goalies working to find their game, BSH has a look at Sergei Bobrovsky, and how much playing time he should get if the Flyers do sign Ilya Bryzgalov.

Over at Puck Worlds, there’s a great look at Amateur Hockey in the US by state, and the continued growth across the US. Consider how many of our Draft Prospect Profiles this year came from the US National Development Program? That’s a really good sign for American hockey, in my humble opinion.

It’s Tuesday. Let’s go Fishing With John.
