Shrapnel – 3/22 Edition

In this edition of Shrapnel: Noel’s past, All-Star game, Nash makes history, 600 goals, one dandy of a fight, and more!

Puck-rakers:

Claude Noel – Jacket Killer. Its true. Coach Noel used to work with Nashville’s minor league players and prepare them for the NHL. A sad statistic “Since the start of the 2006-07 season, Nashville is 22-3-2 against the Jackets.”

BlueJackets XTRA:

Bad news from the league. Columbus won’t be allowed to host an All-Star game until the team settles the lease agreement with Nationwide. This is a real dick move by Bettman because all that money from the entire weekend could really go a long way to helping. Look what it did for Atlanta.

Filatov to return soon? Not so much. His team was swept out of the KHL playoffs, but he is still in Moscow. Bringing him back now could send mixed messages to the guys in the room, but it could also mean we’ll never see him again. Sticky situation, my friends, sticky indeed. We need him. That’s my view.

Proof that Rick Nash is in a league of his own. Ok, not exactly just his, but with some really good company.

Noel calls Saturday’s OT loss the best game he’s seen from his team. I have to admit thats a bit surprising, but going into Nashville, who thought it would go 0-0 into OT to begin with?

Yahoo! Sports:

Want to know the odds of the 8-14 teams making the playoffs? Puck Daddy covers that here. Sorry folks, we’re done. Time to resume our role as spoiler.

Well it only took 1,177 games, but Teemu Selanne finally scored goal number 600 last night. Averaging a goal more than every other game is pretty productive if you ask me. The 18th player to reach the milestone, Selanne is only the 3rd European player to reach 600, leads all active players, and is only 2 goals away from 17th all time. Congrats to you, Teemu.

Via Puck Daddy’s Headlines, this guy takes a jab at our own Steve Mason.

We all know that when you win the cup, you forever have your name etched into one of the greatest trophies sports has to offer. The players aren’t the only ones. Management, owners, coaches, everyone associated with the organization. Think about Phoenix right now, they have a team, coaches, but…owners? Not exactly since techinically the league owns the team. So here’s the question, does Gary Bettman get to have his name on the cup?

NHL.com:

Tonight Detroit meets Pittsburgh in yet another rematch of the last two Stanley Cup Finals. A lot is riding on this game, for both teams. The Wings are trying to cushion their lead over 9th place Calgary. Meanwhile, the Pens are on trying to hold onto their Atlantic division lead over New Jersey. We all know the Wings have been hurting most of the year, and Pitt will be without Malkin. This should be a good one tonight.

BlueJackets.com:

If you need proof that the players haven’t given up, read this. I love players that have this attitude. They’re great guys to have in the room and are going to be more prepared for next season. Way to be, Scrappy Doo!

The Jackets have two more corporate partnerships. You’ll start to see more ads for these two companies around the arena shortly.

On the Forecheck:

What they said. The game thread for the Jackets/Preds game from Saturday.

Quote of the Day:

“Before you begin anything, remind yourself that difficulties and delays lie ahead. You can only see one thing clearly, and that is our goal. Form a mental vision of that and cling to it through thick and thin.”

– Claude Noel

Fight of the Weekend:

St. Louis RW Cam Jannsen v. New Jersey LW Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond. Wow. Almost 3 minutes of pure hockey fighting.

FOTW Honorable Mention:

San Jose LW Ryane Clowe v. Calgary RW Jarome Iginla. Video.
