Shrapnel – 11/23/11

Depending on your personal bent, there are three big reasons to be excited about today.

There’s also something about a big get together for most families tomorrow. Something about a turkey? Gravy? Stuffing? I get the impression it’s important.

Over at Bluejackets.com, Rob has a look at the success of the top line, while Aaron Portzline talks about starting to see positives over at the Dispatch.

Over at Backhand Shelf, Bourne talks about rooting for Sidney Crosby and other “moment makers”, they do a systems analysis of breakdowns in backchecking, there’s more footage of the Jon Mirasty wedding incident, and a look at the worst moustache in the NHL.

After adding Greg May to their team, the family at Dark Blue Jacket continues to grow by leaps and bounds, as AlisonL (also of Heart of a Jacket) will now also be stopping by to share her thoughts there, beginning with a meditation on the number two.

The long national….something…over in Phoenix has ended – Kyle Turris has signed a new contract and will end his holdout. Speculation continues that he wants out of Phoenix. You have to wonder if GM Don Maloney will start listening to offers now, after previously refusing to do anything until Turris had signed on the dotted line.

The news on Steve Mason is not great – the netminder has a mild concussion after taking a shot off his mask in practice on Monday, and he is not on the trip to Jersey. The team hopes to see him back in the lineup by Friday, but this is a situation where you simply can’t be too careful.

Puck Daddy thinks that Crosby’s return makes the Penguins automatic cup favorites, and ask if fans have a right to get more details about player injuries.

Hockey’s Future takes a look at the Jackets’ CHL prospects, and unfortunately several of them are looking like they’ve taken a step back.

After one week, there are three Ottawa Senators in the top five for all star voting. Funny, that. I don’t even complain much about Spezza and Alfedsson, but….Milan Michalek? Really? Really, guys?

Pro Hockey Talk selected Curtis Sanford for their Tuesday Tire-Pump, while Jeff Little looks at the team’s recent success and says it’s all about the legs.

Last but not least, Drew Doughty put a pretty nasty hit on T.J. Oshie in the dying seconds of LA’s victory over the Blues last night. Time for Brendan Shanahan to have another serious test. That’s a “star” player right there cross-checking a defenseless player in the back. Two games? Four games? Dare I hope for six? I mean, we know it won’t be eight, because Oshie didn’t get back up laughing…
