Shrapnel – 1/10/12

Perhaps it was as inevitable as all the experts say, but the firing of Scott Arniel still drove 90% of the Blue Jackets news schedule, and got a great deal of response from the wider NHL media.

On the local side of things, Rob looks at the new era that starts tonight in Chicago, plus quotes from both GM Scott Howson and interim coach Richards. Martini Hockey finds it all graceless, and LTL doesn’t think it’s nearly enough.

Puck Rakers has the bare bones and the player reactions. Gallos and Tom weigh in at Dark Blue Jacket, Jeff Little makes it clear that this was not a joyful day, and the Dispatch today features longer commentary from Portzline, Mitchell, and Bob Hunter.

Meanwhile, Puck Daddy still wonders what took so long, Timo at Hockey Prospectus looks at the flaws in the offense that may have sealed Arniel’s fate, Travis revists the final days, Bourne shares his take at Backhand Shelf, ESPN thinks the ship is still adrift, and PHT looks at Scott Howson’s next likely tasks: parting ways with his players.

Puck Daddy also had a look at the penalty box incident in Anaheim, Jean-Francoise Jacques was suspended for his hit on R.J. Umberger, and Francois Beauchemin avoided punishment for his hit on Jeff Carter.

Dustin Penner got hurt eating pancakes, Brad Marchand doesn’t care about his suspension – or reputation, and Mr. Martini looks back at his pre-season picks at the halfway point.
