Last night, the Flint Firebirds defeated their cross-town rivals, the Saginaw Spirit, 11-2. Kole Sherwood tallied five goals and two assists stretching his point streak to six games.
Let’s take a quick look at Sherwood’s five goals.
Goal 1: A little over six minutes into the game, Moore muscled through a double-team effort by Saginaw and fired at the net. The shot bounced off of Saginaw’s goalie. Sherwood skated in for the rebound grabbing a piece of the puck before it sailed into the net.
Goal 2: A wide open Sherwood broke away from the pack and backhanded the puck into the net.
Goal 3: With 3.2 seconds left in the first period, Sherwood set up shop near the goal post. Saginaw didn’t even notice him until Moore fed Sherwood the puck. By then it was too late for Saginaw to do anything. Sherwood would swiftly pop the puck right into the net.
Goal 4: Yet again, Moore fed the puck to Sherwood who fired it from the top of the left face off circle right into the back of the net.
Goal 5: With 6.7 seconds left in the second period, Sherwood picked up a rebound and fired the puck right behind the goalie.
His five goals tied the Firebirds’ franchise record for most goals in a game. Kevin Brown set the record in 1993, four years before Sherwood was born.
Kole is not the only Sherwood making an impression in the hockey world. His brother, Kiefer, has been setting the NCAA ablaze while playing for Miami University.
Kiefer Sherwood earned Miami’s Athlete of the Week for the third time this season after scoring two goals 53 seconds apart in Miami’s 6-3 win over Ohio State.
On January 8th, 2017 Sherwood tallied a goal and an assist during Miami’s win over St. Cloud State University, 4-1. This was his ninth multi-point game of the 2016-17 season.
Sherwood is second on the team in goals (10), assists (13), and points (23).
*Side note: In Miami’s 6-3 win over Ohio State, Columbus native, Carson Meyer came up big with a goal and an assist.
