Rick Rypien – Tragedy Strikes Again

A little over three months since the shocking death of Derek Boogard, the NHL and the community of hockey fans around the world are mourning again this evening after news that Rick Rypien, late of the Winnipeg Jets and formerly a member of the Vancouver Canucks, was found dead in his home.

There have been reports that Rypien may have taken his own life. At this point they have not been confirmed, but if so, it is the unfortunate final chapter of a life that was marked with battles against depression and anger issues.

While I can’t say I’m hugely attached to who Rick Rypien was as a hockey player, I mourn for Rick Rypien the man, and the friends and family who are now dealing with this tragedy.

If you read this and you have been battling depression, there is no shame in asking for help. Talk to your family, talk to your doctor, talk to your priest, or just talk to a random stranger if you need to, but please reach out.

If you have considered taking your own life, please think of those who love you. There are always options, and it is important you receive help. In the United States, you can call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255. If you are in Canada, please call your local Distress Centre or 1-800-784-2433. The calls are free and they are there to help.
