Goal Recap

The Cleveland Monsters ended up on the losing side of history tonight as they fell to the Stockton Heat, 6-3.

Jordan Schroeder kicked things off for the Monsters 11:33 into the game. Realizing he was stuck behind the net, Carter Camper passed the puck to Schroeder who popped it in for the goal.

Two minutes later, Spencer Foo lofted the puck past Matiss Kivlenieks from between the faceoff circles to tie the game at one for the Heat.

The Heat took the 2-1 lead 5:37 into the second period. Brady Austin blocked Hunter Shinkaruk’s shot with his skate. Shinkaruk picked up the rebound and scored from below the goal line.

The Monsters tied the game with 13:52 left in the second period after Nick Moutrey passed the puck from the left faceoff dot to Schroeder who fired it home from the right side of the net.

Not even 20 seconds later, the Heat took the 3-2 lead over the Monsters.

Austin Carroll picked up the puck from behind the net and swiftly pushed it past Kivleniek’s skate.

With 26.4 seconds left in the in the second period, Shinkaruk scored his second of the night after one timing a shot from in front of the net.

The Heat ended the second period leading the Monsters, 4-2.

Ivan Kulbakov replaced Kivlenieks in net to start the third period.

A little over three minutes into the third period, Andersson extended the Heat’s lead over the Monsters to 5-2. He received a silky smooth pass from Rod Pelley who was stationed at the left faceoff dot.

Three minutes and two seconds later, Joe Pendenza put the Monsters within two of the Heat, 5-3.

Miles Koules fired a shot from the top of the right faceoff circle and Pendenza directed it into the goal.

The Heat extended their lead over the Monsters with 3:12 to play in the third period.

Within seconds of Madden pulling Kulbakov, a turnover at the blue line allowed Klimchuk to score on the Monsters empty net.

After the empty net goal, the Monsters tried their hardest to score a goal but nothing seemed to work. The Heat went on to beat the Monsters, 6-3.

But Wait! There’s More

Quick Thoughts

  • Miles Koules laid a lot of nice hits tonight. This is the  most aggressive he has played all season. Strength is a much needed addition to the third line and Koules definitely brought it.
  • Alex Broadhurst was as man on a mission tonight. He applied a lot of pressure on the Heat. There was no way he was going to let  them get past the blue line with the puck. In fact, the Heat barely  made it past center ice with the puck when A.Broadhurst was on the  ice.
  • Despite losing Zac Dalpe and Nathan Gerbe to Columbus the lines didn’t stay much. In fact, the Monsters played fairly well without either of them. This is a good sign for the Monsters. It  means the team is finally gelling together in a way which will allow them to succeed no matter who is on the ice.
  • The Heat came out so strong in the third period it made the Monsters look sluggish and a step behind. They couldn’t match the Heat’s intensity no matter how hard they tried.
  • On the road, Matiss Kivlenieks played four straight games of spectacular hockey. Unfortunately, tonight that was not the case. He let a few soft goals into the net and didn’t plug up holes like he normally does.   /

“I don’t think goals should go in from behind the goal  line. He kind of lost sight of the puck. Just a save once in a while  keeps us in the hockey game.” - Head Coach John Madden
