Goal Recap

The San Diego Gulls and Cleveland Monsters went toe-to-toe tonight. With every passing period, the intensity of the game heated up. By the time overtime rolled around both teams were firing on all cylinders.

The Monsters played well until the bitter end. Ultimately, it was a bad pass which led to the Monsters demise in overtime, 4-3.

Cleveland kicked the scoring off 8:08 into the game.

Reto Berra saw a puck coming down the ice towards the boards behind him. He quickly left the crease and went behind the net in an attempt to clear it out of the zone. The puck bounced off of the boards towards Alex Broadhurst who swept it into the wide open net.

With 4:51 left in the second period, the Gulls tied the game at one.

Kevin Roy passed the puck what looked to be a hair out of Austin Ortega’ reach. Ortega was able to get his stick on the puck. He swiveled and backhanded it into the net.

Spencer Naas scored his first professional goal almost halfway through the second period.

Brady Austin no look passed the puck backwards to Naas who fired it into the net from the top of the right faceoff circle. At this point the Monsters led the Gulls, 2-1.

The lead would not last long for the Monsters.

With eight minutes left in the second period, Austin Ortega fired a shot from the top of the right faceoff circle. Matiss Kivlenieks was able to stop the initial shot but Corey Tropp was there to fire the rebound into the net.

A snipe from the blue line by Jacob Larsson put the Gulls up 3-2 with 18:06 to play in the game.

The Monsters turned on the burners and desperately tried to tie the game up.

Their hardwork paid off. With 3:18 left in the game, Jordan Schroeder tied the game at three. Nathan Gerbe tossed the puck through the zone towards Schroeder who one-timed the puck into the net.

As per tradition, the Monsters headed to overtime.

The Gulls walked away with the win with 2:03 left in overtime.

Ohio native, Kiefer Sherwood patiently waited for this teammates to pass him the puck before firing it past an outstretched Kivlenieks.

Quick Thoughts

  • Spencer Naas was a joy to watch play tonight. Not only is he  fast and nimble, he also knows how to take a hit. One of Naas’ best  attributes is his ability to attack the net like a rabid animal. He  never gives up and never quits. Mistakes were pretty much non  existent for Naas as well.   /

Spencer Naas scored in his first professional game. I guess you could say it was a good night for him as he scored a goal in the the second period.

Alex Broadhurst is riding a three game point streak.

Kiefer Sherwood made his professional debut with the Gulls scoring the game winning goal in overtime.

What’s Next

The San Diego Gulls and Cleveland Monsters meet again at 3pm on Sunday, March 24th.

The first 2,500 kids, 14 & under, will receive a set of player trading cards. There will also be a postgame skate!

Then the Monsters hit the road for a four game west coast road trip.
