Recap: Monsters Fall Flat Against Americans

Rochester American (4) at Cleveland Monsters (0)

The Cleveland Monsters fell to their rivals, the Rochester Americans, on what should have been an exciting night for fans and the organization. Any themed night is fun but the fans were extra pumped for Nickelodeon Night which featured special Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle themed jerseys.

I mean look at these jerseys. They are pretty sweet. What’s not to love about them?

As an added bonus, the Americans wore Foot Clan themed jerseys.

By the time puck dropped, the energy from the fans was off the charts. Unfortunately, the fans were more invested into the game than the players.

“I think we enjoyed our break a little too much. We had no legs, no compete, no desire. Without having any of those you don’t give yourself a chance.” – Head Coach John Madden

The players alternated between a sluggish and frantic style of play.

Typically, the penalty kill is a bright spot for the Monsters. Tonight, this was not the case. Three of the Americans’ goals came when the Monsters were down a man. When you first see a stat like that one might assume the goalie was having an off night. However, Matiss Kivlienks was the bright spot in tonight’s loss. He kept the team in the game for as long as he could.

“I wouldn’t fault him (Kivlenieks) on any goal tonight. I thought he played extremely well. Our guys, I thought there was no sacrifice getting into lanes or second effort or following a simple game plan.” – Head Coach John Madden

The hardest part about tonight’s loss is the fact the Monsters were on a three-game win streak. Another win meant extending the streak and jumping into second place in the division.
