Goal Recap

The Grand Rapids Griffins kicked of scoring 1:40 into the game. Ben Street backhanded the puck past Zac Dalpe’s stick. Eric Tangradi deflected it into the back of the net for the goal.

A little over three minutes into the second period Carter Camper tied the game for the Monsters.

Markus Hannikainen slightly pushed the puck through Jared Coreau’s five-hole. As it slowed down, Carter Camper snuck behind Coreau and slammed the puck home for the goal.

The Monsters took the 2-1 lead with 508 left in the second period.

Nathan Gerbe fired the puck with such bravato the only way Terry Broadhurst could get out of the way was to jump in the air. The puck sailed just below T.Broadhurst’s skate and bounced off of Coreau’s pad. T.Broadhurst picked up the rebound and backhanded it to his brother, Alex, who fired it into the goal.

A minute and a half into the third period the Griffins tied the game at two. Colin Campbell passed the puck to Dominic Turgeon who fired it past Kivlenieks’s glove.

Despite many attempts, the Monsters and Griffins were unable to score in the rest of regulation and overtime. They headed to a shootout to decide the game.

Shootout

Round 1

Zac Dalpe – Dalpe picked up the puck at center ice. He skated to the left before firing off a shot from the edge of the faceoff directly into Coreau’s pad. – NO GOAL

Axel Holmstrom – Holstrom picked up the puck and flew through the faceoff circle. As he neared the net, he did a few nifty tricks and ended up backhanding the shot away from Kivlenieks. – NO GOAL

Round 2

Markus Hannikainen – Hannikainen went full steam towards the net and tired to fire the puck through Coreau’s five-hole. – NO GOAL

Matt Puempel – Puempel skated left to right. Then back to the left and fired the puck. Kivlenieks knocked it away. – NO GOAL

Round 3

Nathan Gerbe – Gerbe went forehand to backhand a few times before firing the puck just shy of the left post into the net. – GOAL

Matt Lorito – Lorito swung out to the right and fired a shot from the faceoff circle directly into Kivlenieks’ chest – NO GOAL

But Wait! There’s More

Quick Thoughts

  • Head Coach John Madden rolled out new lines tonight. They  were a bit interesting and a few fan favorites like Jordan Maletta and Miles Koules were scratched. This made me scratch my head a bit as they are both a positive presence on the ice.   /

“I wanted a more well balanced attack. Especially after  coming off of a four-day break. I thought if we could roll four  lines. Maybe wear them down a little bit and take advantage of the  fact we had four solid lines.” – Head Coach John Madden

  • The line changes during breakaways are definitely not working  for the Monsters. Whoever is on the breakaway gets double and triple  teamed every single time. Both Nathan Gerbe and Calvin Thurkauf missed out on goals because they were triple teamed on a breakaway tonight.
  • Coreau was out of place multiple times tonight. Yet, the Monsters couldn’t fire off a shot to save their life when the net  was unattended.
  • In the first period, the Monsters’ defense ended up in scoring range more than the forwards. Luckily, it didn’t stay that  way all night.
  • When the Monsters have the choice to go first or second in  the shootout, they will pick first every time.    /

“I like going first. Especially if you think you have a  shooter that can score right away for you. Dalps (Dalpe) usually  does that for you.” – Head Coach John Madden
